
Although 40 percent of college freshmen say they binge drink -- five or more drinks on one occasion -- a new study has found than up to 20 percent of male students go far beyond the binge-drinking threshold, consuming more than 10 or 15 drinks per drinking session.

Since 1993, the number of college students who drink and binge drink has remained about the same, in spite of all prevention efforts. Perhaps more alarming, the intensity of excessive drinking and rates of drug abuse have jumped sharply, according to The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.
